Simple friend vs Real friend…….which are you?

A simple friend, when visiting, acts like a guest.
A real friend opens your refrigerator and helps herself and doesn’t feel even the least bit weird shutting your ‘Pepsi drawer’ with her foot!

A simple friend has never seen you cry.
A real friend shoulder is soggy from your tears..

A simple friend doesn’t know your parents’ first
names.
A real friend has their phone numbers
in her address book.

A simple friend brings a bottle of wine to your
party.
A real friend comes early to help you cook and
stays late to help you clean.

A simple friend hates it when you call after
they’ve gone to bed.
A real friend asks you why you took so long to
call.

A simple friend seeks to talk with you about your
problems.
A real friend seeks to help you with your problem s.

A simple friend wonders about your romantic
history.
A real friend could blackmail you with it!

A simple friend thinks the friendship is over when
you have an argument.
A real friend calls you after you had a fight.

A simple friend expects you to always be there for
them.
A real friend expects to always be there for you!

When you are down to nothing …
God is up to something.

‘Never frown, even when you are sad,
because you never know who is
falling in love with your smile.

  1. I believe I am a real friend.
I am old enough to know the difference.
    cute post.

  2. This made me think about my friendships. I am as real as they get!

  3. Hi – I enjoyed the post! It also made me think.

But after I thought about it, I believe it’s lacking one point. Real friends aren’t made overnight, and they usually start as simple friends before the relationship grows.

For instance, if I meet someone at work and become friendly with her, then when she visits my house for the first time she helps herself to my refrigerator, I would (probably) consider that rude, not a sign of real friendship. But our friendship certainly might grow and, after a few visits to my house, I wouldn’t consider it rude for her to help herself to my refrigerator.

A more telling distinction for a person might be:
Starts as a simple friend, but does not pursue real friendship
    vs.
Starts as a simple friend, then works hard to make his/her friendship grow into a real friendship.

Of course it’s different for every example in the post – for instance, a newly-made friend could certainly come early to help cook and clean for a party. That’s probably one thing she could do to turn herself into a real friend. And a newly-made friend who will turn into a real friend will probably not think that the friendship is over after an argument.

Thanks for these interesting reflections on friendship!

  4. i have lots of “simple friends”

  5. I am lucky enough to have several real friends who help me out whenever I need them. They are like family to me.It takes time to develop real friendships. Be patient. Be kind.

  6. Love this one!
